Match reports

The 8th open match On Sunday 16th December NAA staged an extra open match on Enborne Canal.   The canal was looking good when pegged on the Saturday afternoon with fish topping throughout the length.  It was a different scenario that confronted the 13 anglers on the Sunday morning.  The temperature had dropped so much overnight that the canal had frozen over.  Luckily John Cox, who lives a few hundred yards away from the venue, went home and fetched an ice breaker.  After much crashing about the match started on time but it was always going to be hard in such conditions especially when the sun came out as well.  With most anglers starting on either chopped worm or punched bread, Martin Pallett opted for the squat approach which proved successful and he ran out the winner with 6lb 2oz of small fish and picked up £108 in pools money.  It could not have been tighter for the next 3 positions with Brian Cripps second with 3lb 3oz of perch, coming third and just edging out Dave Chandler by the narrowest of margins was Dave Smith.

The 7th NAA Open was switched from Avington to the deeper Step-up Cottage length due to the colour dropping out of the water.  All 11 anglers had to put up with a strong wind and again it was chopped worm that did the business.  Drawn on the end peg on the wides at the top of the Step-up cottage length was Andy Chapman who managed 16lb 8oz of Perch and took home £107 in pools.  A popular win, as Andy has supported every NAA open with his travelling partner Paul Denman.  Second was joint match organiser Ade Agar with 11lb 10oz of perch including the fish of the match a perch of 3lb, a net worth £80 in pools money. Third overall was Martin Wicks with another perch net of 9lb.

The 6th NAA open match took place on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Step-up cottage and Enborne on Saturday 3rd November.  With the water starting to cool down and becoming clearer it was chopped worm that accounted for the winning weight.  Twenty two anglers fished and the winner, with 19lb 4oz from the canes at the Step-up Cottage stretch and picking up £157 in pools was Bubble (alias R. Head).  Second with a surprise net of tench was Matt Herbert with 18lb 9oz from the top peg on the Enborne stretch, unfortunately he dropped a couple of good fish that would have won the match but he wasn’t to upset with the £100 pools money. Rounding off the frame from the canes at Step-up Cottage was Steve Pawson with 13lb 10oz of Perch.  Section winners were Carl Eland (Step-up section) with 11lb 6oz and Andy Chapman (Enborne) with 9lb 4oz each collecting £30 pools money.

The 5th NAA open match took place at Brimpton and Colthrop on Saturday 6th October.  Most of the 13 competitors struggled with the clear water conditions and the river still flowing very fast.  However, Jumbo Blanchard made the most of his draw on Peg 7 in Colthrop weir taking top spot and £110.50 pools money with 6 good bream taken in the first 2 hours on groundbait feeder and worm for an excellent 25lb 6oz.  Left counting the cost of the extremely fast “Linda’s swim” at Brimpton, Martin Pallett, who dropped 3 good chub and an unstoppable barbel, still managed second place and £72 pools money with 3 chub and a barbel on waggler and maggot for 15lb 8oz.  Third was Paul Denman on Peg 10 at Brimpton with 2 chub on the pole for 7lb 8oz.

Match Report  4th Open Match Sat 1st September.

The 4th open match was fished at Speen Moors on the river Kennet on Saturday 1st September and again attendance was up on last time with 21 anglers attending.  This meant that 2 anglers picked up money for section wins as well as those in the top 3.  John Cox uncannily drew the exact same peg as in the first open on Speen Moors back in June, Peg 38 at the top of Parliament Draft.  This time the bream failed to show on the main river in any numbers and John took top spot and £147 in pools with a good net of dace and chub on maggot and waggler for 27lb 6oz.  Second on the day and the only person to find a few bream on his first visit to the venue was Adam Smith with 18lbs from peg 5 in the woods who went home £90 better off.  Completing the frame was Martin Pallett who had 3 good chub to go with some roach for 12lb 8oz and £60 pools money.

3rd Open Match Sat 4th August – Colthrop and Brimpton.

Although the attendance keeps rising this time to 17 anglers it could have been a lot more but due to the recent flooding a lot of people cancelled to clean up their houses including last time winner Brian Pallett.  The match itself fished a lot better than last months even though the river was higher and pushing through a lot more.  Winner on the day collecting £144 was Paul Smythe on Peg 23 at Colthrop.  Starting with waggler and maggot while feeding pellet Paul amassed 4lb of Dace before switching to pellet on the hook to take chub and barbel for a winning weight of 29lb 6ozs.  Second was Martin Pallett on Peg 3 at Brimpton with 12lb 8ozs included a 9lb barbell taken on pole and maggot.  Third was Mike Fairey on Peg 6 at Brimpton with 8lb.

Open Match Report

The second of NAA’s open matches was fished on Saturday 7th July at Brimpton and Colthrop.  Fifteen anglers fished a fairly difficult match due to bright sunlight and the river colouring up during the match.  It was good to see some new faces including a couple of highly experienced Kennet anglers from Reading.   However, on the day it was local rod Brian Pallett that had the top prize of £127.50 with 4 chub and some small fish for 20lb 8oz to maggot and stick float from the point at Brimpton.  Second overall was Andy Chapman on the “dustbin swim” at Brimpton with an excellent 11lb 2oz of dace up to 12oz.  Third was Adrian Agar on the Aldershot weir at Colthrop with 5lb 4oz.

Results             1.         B.Pallett           20lb 8oz

                        2.         A. Chapman     11lb 2oz

                        3.         A. Agar            5lb 4oz

                        4.         P. Denham       4lb 8oz

                        5.         T.Pallet 3lb 4oz

Rover match Aldermaston Sunday 8th July.

The second match of the Rover Trophy series was fished on the Kennet at Aldermaston and as usual turned out to be hard struggle to find some fish.   Match Secretary Malcolm Chapple managed to winkle out 4lb 6ozs, comfortably beating the rest of the field.  The next places were very close with Henry Sadler second with 2lb 15oz, Adrian Agar 3rd and Martin Pallett tied for 3rd with 2lb1oz .  Lets hope the next match at Colthrop throws up some better weights.

Twilight series - Third match Willows Tuesday 3rd July.

The Third match in the series was fished on Willows.  The weights were more respectable with Ashley Blunt again in the frame with a winning weight of 44lb 11oz,  Steve Thame was second with 31lb 3oz and Adrian Agar 3rd with 22lb 10.  This means that there is a tight race for number one spot and the next match on the Kennet at Colthrop should sort out the all round anglers

60+ series. Dobsons Wed 27th June

The first match in the series was fished on Dobsons and 19 oldies turned out.  The weights were very respectable with Mervyn Burrows and Dave Smith doing battle for first place.  Mervyn on peg 2 weighed in 23lb 6oz of bream and very narrowly edged out Dave on Peg 13 who had a mixed bag of carp, bream, rudd and roach which on very close scrutiny could only force the scales round to 23lb 4ozs.  Bill Bowsher came in third with 7lb 6ozs.  The next match on Bellwood should not require such a big set of scales!!

Twilight series second match Avington E  Tuesday 26th June.

The second match in the series was fished on Avington section E as the scheduled D section had been denuded of far bank vegetation by over enthusiastic pruning.  The weights were low with several anglers struggling to catch more than 1lb.  Adrian Agar showed his skill and managed a respectable 4lb 7oz,Ashley Blunt was second with 2lb 6oz narrowly edging out John Cox who caught 2lb 3ozs.  Lets hope for bigger weights on the next match at Willows.

Open Match Saturday 23rd June Speen Moors.

The first of NAA’s 10 open match series, fished  at Speen Moors on the river Kennet, got of to a very smooth start and a lot of fish were caught.  Thirteen anglers fished and John Cox drawn on Peg 38 at the top of Parliament Draft must have fancied his chances of winning with 26lb 12oz of waggler caught chub and dace but it was only good enough for second place.   Following on from her win on the first rover match Linda Pallett drew peg 5 down in the woods and promptly set about crashing out an incredible 53lb 8ozs of bream on pole fished red maggot over groundbait which won her £108 from the pools.  It could have been a lot more but unfortunately Linda pulled out 8 good bream including one estimated at double figures.  It was a close fight for third place with Dave Smith on Peg 15 just edging out Tony Pallet on Peg 53 by 1lb.

Results

            1st Linda Pallett 53lb 8ozs

2nd John Cox     26lb 12oz

3rd Dave Smith  13lb 2oz

4th Tony Pallett 12lb 1oz 8drams

5th Brian Pallett 10lb 0oz

The next open match will take place on Brimpton and Colthrop on Saturday 7th July.  Draw will take place at Colthrop weir at 12:00 not 12:30 as stated on the permit.

Please remember this series is of open matches open to anyone, all you need to do is to book in with NAA Match Secretary Malcolm Chapple on 07840835413 or 01635 871418

Match Report

Twilight series first match Dobson’s Tuesday 19th June.

Nineteen anglers turned out on a thundery evening for the first match in the series.  Despite the rumbles of thunder and flashes of lighting luckily there was not a lot of rain and the majority caught fish although catches were not substantial.  The match was won by Pete Grayson with 3 carp for 18lb 10oz, Mervyn Burrows was second with 2 carp for 14lb 8oz and Roger Durnford was a close third with a mixed bag for 14lb 4ozs.  We are hoping for a quiter evening for the next match at Avington.

Match Report

Speen Moors Main River Sunday 17th June.

The first match of the Rover Trophy series was fished on the main river at Speen Moors and the result turned out to be a family affair as Linda Pallett weighed in a winning weight of 20lbs 4oz consisting mainly of bream and husband Martin was second with 7lb 14oz.    Tommy Wheeler was a close third with 7lb 1oz.  The majority of the 14 anglers weighed in and Linda’s winning weight came from the wooded section down below the remains of the old railway bridge.  Several bream and chub were caught but Linda showed the male anglers how it should be done to win the first match in this popular series.
